It was a cheery morning on the farm. The temperature was spring-time pleasant and the sun was out. A breeze carried the sweet aroma of the yellow kowhai flowers. From the pig barn, Mozart’s music wafted across the meadow. “This is a happy place.” Lexi thought. “The pigs have it good, too.”

By the time she entered the shed, Mitch and his six herders had already left for work. Her cousins were still sleeping. Jetlag had done them in. Seeing Rosie in her slumber, Lexi relived yesterday’s argument that drove her to join the cats in the barn. She had never made a point like that to Rosie. Traveling inspired new behaviors. She was proud she had asserted herself. It made her feel good.

“Good morning everybody,” Lexi called out. “Wake up! Shall we see what’s for breakfast?”

The aroma of warm chicken-and-mushroom pie with onion gravy filled the air. There was also fresh mincemeat pie doused with tomato sauce, the top crust almost intact; sweet potato mash and slabs of duck pate. The brilliant yellow yolks of the hard boiled eggs, peeled and sliced, rivaled the morning sun. What choices! Lexi was so grateful.
